Introduction

Healthy relationships with family, friends and colleagues are important for everyone's well-being. The changes that occur with dementia can strain these relationships and cause confusion and misunderstanding.

This session will offer ideas about how to help support a person with dementia that is living in a care home and how to ensure the best quality of life.  It will offer guidance around ways to cope with the changes being experienced while staying connected at the same time.

Learning Objectives

When you have completed this session, you will be able to:

  • Understand that families and friends continue to play a critical role in care when a person with dementia moves to a care home.
  • Identify ways to support the person in their new home.
  • Explore a variety of activity ideas for family visits to enhance the physical, mental and emotional quality of life of the person with dementia.
  • Understand the difference between verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Identify how the physical environment can be arranged to make the person with dementia more comfortable.
  • Understand how to involve other family and friends in maintaining the connection.

Work through the various parts of the session at your leisure.  Move from one part to another at your own pace and in the order that makes sense to you, based on your own needs and interests.
