Session 12 - Preparing for Changes Ahead

Introduction

In this session you will become more familiar with the changes people with dementia are likely to experience in the later stages of the disease.  Understanding these changes, and the physical care issues that come in the late stage, will help you to know what to expect and how to achieve maximum health and comfort.

We’ll also introduce some ideas around decision making, holding a family meeting and managing your feelings.

Learning Objectives

When you have completed this session, you will be able to:

  • Know how to adapt to the expected changes in the late stage of dementia.
  • Identify tools to assist in making hopeful, proactive decisions about care options.
  • Know how to involve all family members in decision making.
  • Describe feelings that accompany changes in family members’ ability to function.

Work through the various parts of the session at your leisure.  Move from one part to another at your own pace and in the order that makes sense to you, based on your own needs and interests.

Take time to visit the Discussion Forums, where you can post, in a common area, messages to all other community members. It’s a place for you to interact with others and to discuss the topics and ideas introduced throughout this session.
