Session 11 - Working with Care Providers

Part 3 - Communicating with Care Home Staff

You and the person with dementia will come into contact with many people at the long-term care home. Communicating appropriate information about the person’s life, former occupation and daily routines can help staff provide the best possible care. It helps to give a picture of the person before the disease. Download and print a copy of the activity sheet below. Take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the tips for communicating effectively with care home staff.

For reflection....

After you’ve reviewed the activity sheet, take a few minutes to reflect on the following questions.  Feel free to make some notes.

  • Which of these communication tips have you tried?
  • Which of these communication tips are new to you? How confident are you that you will try them?
  • What other communication tips could you share with care partners, based on your own experience?
