Clean, safe and happy were my mandate for the care of my wife during her journey with this disease. I based all of my decisions for her care on these three things.
Clean: I made sure that I kept all of her laundry needs done up weekly. I was able to shower her 6 out of 7 days with the missing day being part of my respite. I had her hair done monthly with a perm as required. I had her foot and hand nails done monthly.
Safe: She was in a locked facility that provided excellent meals and surroundings.
Happy: I took her for a drive every Sunday. When the facility had a band, dance, choir or other activity I took her. As well, we walked twice a day through all the halls and in the good weather we walked around the facility or to a nearby shopping centre. I always made sure she was happy.
What criteria do you try to meet for the care of your loved one?
